Fay

Fay

Active Travel Officer

Hi, I’m Fay! I’ve been an Active Travel Officer at Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub since it opened in 2017. I’m First Aid, Mechanics and Walk Leader trained, I’m also a PFA Cascade Trainer which allows me to deliver walk leader courses to new hub volunteers, which I also lead on the management of! In my spare time, I like to teach fitness classes (when I have time or not spending time with my gorgeous granddaughter) and have been known to do a bit of DIY and home decoration – chances are you’ll find me in B & Q most weekends 😊.

Pernille

Pernille

Project Officer

Hiya, I’m Pernille and I’m a Project Officer with the Active Travel Hub Kilmarnock. I’ve been with the Hub since spring 2021. As a Walk Leader, Ride Leader, and Cycle Trainer, you’re likely to find me leading a walk, ride or cycle skills session with the Hub. However, most of the time I’ll be behind my desk doing our digital media. Outside work I like to do more of what we do at work: walk and ride. I zoom along on my bike to get to places and on the weekends, I go hillwalking or stroll around my local parks. I also dance and try out various classes at my local gym (some with more success than others). You’ll often find me with a cup of tea or coffee in hand happily blethering away with a friend.

Cameron

Cameron

Delivery Officer

Hi everyone! My name is Cameron and I am the Delivery Officer at Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub, so you should be seeing me everywhere. My background is predominantly in mental health and wellbeing, and I am Mental Health First Aid and ASIST trained. You’ll find me out on our walk, ride and cycle sessions, as well as throughout the community promoting our services. Outside of Sustrans you’ll find me swimming, running (weather permitting), or travelling around the UK and beyond exploring. I’m always keen to learn about people and their stories, so please come in for a chat!

Darren

Darren

Active Travel Hubs Coordinator

I’m an outdoor environmental education specialist with 20 years of experience of working in employment and skills training initiatives and community regeneration projects. I have a background in urban regeneration and have developed and managed projects that connect people with nature and enhance public landscapes, provide vocational training and promote sustainable living. I’ve been working for Sustrans since the summer of 2021 and live on the Isle of Arran where I try hard to mountain bike.

Nina

Nina

Active Travel Hubs Manager

My name is Nina. I am the new Active Travel Hubs Manager. I started in July 2022 and I am very excited to be supporting and guiding the Hubs team on East and South Ayrshire’s Active Travel Journey. I have 5 years of experience leading and delivering active travel programmes, with a focus on cycling and engagement of those underrepresented in cycling. I achieved my cycle trainer course 5 years ago but now spend more time in front of a computer than on a saddle (professionally). Outside work, you’ll see me on my bike, bikepacking mainly, camping, open water swimming, gardening and now even foraging!

Alan

Volunteer

Hi. I'm Alan Woodison, one of the mechanics at the Active Travel Hub in Kilmarnock. I also work now and again at the bike shop in Stewarton, providing holiday cover or repairing bikes in the busier better-weather months. I am a founder member of the local Walkers Cycling Club, now in the role of secretary. I retired eight years ago as Group Editor of regional titles within the Trinity Mirror newspaper group. I have also worked in communications for the Labour Party and for North Ayrshire Council. I live in Knockentiber - conveniently enough 100 yards from the Sustrans cycle path.

Anne Fewkes

Anne F

Volunteer

Hi all I’m Anne Fewkes an almost 70 years young walk leader for Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub along with the hubby Kevin. We joined when moving to Scotland 6 years ago as I didn’t know a soul & was very depressed. We joined the group just to meet people & especially for me to have other females to talk to. I really looked forward to Mondays to see others who have now become good friends, the exercise is beneficial to improve my health for my oncoming hip operation & also to help with weight loss. The group has been a life saver for me.

Hello, my name is Anne McDonald. I am a volunteer walk leader with the Active Travel Hub in Kilmarnock. I began walking with the group 5 years ago, after rediscovering my working week by two days. I was a registered nurse and was well versed on the benefits of regular exercise. The group walk was also dog friendly, therefore a great way to exercise the dog also. I progressed to training as a walk leader, which was very interesting, followed by an excellent first aid course. It’s a pleasure walking with new people and passing on my love of walking with them. I have volunteered at other events, including “Freshers Week” at local further education venues.

After a lifelong career as a pharmacist store manager with Boots, I retired in December 2017, and started walking with the Hub. My aim was to stay active and to meet lots of new people. After a few months I was asked if I would be interested in volunteering as a walk leader. I also walked with the Wednesday evening and Friday Dean Park walks, but now concentrate on the Monday walk. I do like to share these activities on social media, and always talk about the group to many friends and colleagues. I can honestly say how good I feel at being so active, at Hub walks and my own walking around the Dean Park and Borland, as often as I can.

Married to Iain 50 years this year with two grown up married children and three beautiful grandchildren. Retired 10 years ago having worked as a senior education manager. Adjusting to retirement and the loss of both my parents within a short period of time left me with an enormous void and the period of transition was difficult. To add to the upheaval my husband sold his business which included our home of 40 years so we moved to Stewarton. I looked for activities and social groups in the area to establish a connection and sense of belonging to this new area. Fortunately, I discovered Gillian’s walks and along with others have followed that path since the beginning. The establishment of the Active Travel Hub in Kilmarnock brought other opportunities and till lockdown I also enjoyed the Thursday evening cycling group. The activities brought a great deal of benefit at a difficult time. I enjoyed meeting new people some also recently retired. The exercise and outdoor lifestyle boosted my spirits. My health and fitness greatly improved allowing me to continue an active retirement and keep up with my energetic grandchildren. I am now lucky enough to call some of the people I have met through this walking group good friends.

I'm Jennifer and I'm a ride leader at the Kilmarnock Active Travel Hub. I work as a GP and enjoy cycling to work on my e-bike. I even do house calls by bike! I love helping people get more active and explore their local area by bike. I have learned so much about cycle routes near Kilmarnock since I became a volunteer. I'm looking forward to getting out on more rides this year with the hub and also with Cycle Ayrshire cycle club.

Hi, my name is Jenny McCurry and I am a walk leader volunteer with the Active Travel Hub in Kilmarnock. I've been with the Hub for about four years now and currently help with the Tuesday and Friday health walks in two of our lovely parks in Kilmarnock, i.e. the Howard Park and Dean Castle Park. I enjoy meeting up with different people and just going for a walk. After a while, these strangers become friends, plus you have the added benefit of exercise, which is always good for the body, soul and mind.

I'm a ride leader, cycle trainer and Dr Bike Mechanic at the Hub in Kilmarnock. I've been riding the quiet roads and paths around Stewarton and Kilmarnock for the last 15 years, so I know how to get pretty much everywhere. I'm just as happy doing road cycling, mountain biking or even on the velodrome track. Participating and volunteering in outdoor activities is a big part of my life, and that's made even better by the people that I can share the experience with. As well as cycling I'm also a keen dinghy sailor and racer.
