Want a bit of inspiration for your next walk or ride? We have designed route cards for some of our favourite walking and cycling routes in South Ayrshire. Download these for free onto your phone or print them out at home to bring along on your journey.

Walking Routes:

Oswald Bridge Trail
Oswald Bridge Trail, distance 4.2 miles. Located just outside the county town of Ayr, Auchincruive Estate is a popular walking and mountain bike destination with a network of picturesque trails. One of the longer routes on the Estate, this walk combines a stretch of pleasant riverside walking with woodland trails and a return through the estate arboretum.
Prestwick to Troon Town Hall
Prestwick to Troon Town Hall Ayrshire Coastal Path, distance 3.6 miles. This part of the Ayrshire Coastal Path sees you walking along the side of Prestwick Golf Course and the end of the runway of Prestwick Airport and into Prestwick Holiday Park. Then heading over the Pow Burn onto the sands and walking parallel to Royal Troon Golf Course and passing the end of the Smugglers’ Trail. The walk thereafter takes you onto the shared path that runs parallel to South Beach connecting with the Esplanade all the way to Troon Town Hall.
Greenan to Heads of Ayr
Greenan to Heads of Ayr, distance 4.5 miles. This part of the path sees you walking from the car park in Greenan along the beach south, under Greenan Castle, past Craig Tara Holiday Park and continuing on towards the Heads of Ayr. The views out to sea of the coast are stunning, especially on a clear day.

Cycling Routes:

Barassie to Troon
NCN Route 7 South – Barassie to Troon, distance 4.1 miles. Mainly traffic-free shared paths with only a very small part being on-roads which are all 30 mph.
Troon to Barassie
NCN Route 7 North – Troon to Barassie, distance 4.1 miles. Mainly traffic-free shared paths with only a very small part being on-roads which are all 30 mph.
Troon to Prestwick Airport
NCN Route 7 South – Troon to Prestwick Airport, distance 2.8 miles. Mainly traffic-free shared paths with only a very small part at the end being on-road but has a dedicated cycle track.
Troon Loop Cycle Route
Troon Loop Cycle Route, distance 8.7 miles. This route is a circular route which is mainly flat. Suitable for beginners and families. Some on-road quiet sections, but mainly local cycle network and National Cycle Network (NCN 7). The route can be split up with multiple start points and shortened for cycle path only.
Citadel Leisure Centre to Murdoch’s Lone
Citadel Leisure Centre to Murdoch’s Lone, distance 9.6 miles. This route starts at Citadel Leisure Centre and follows the NCN 7 towards The Millennium Bridge, up to Greenan Castle and onward to Dunure Road. This route is mainly flat and well surfaced. However, the hill to the castle is very steep. Suitable for intermediate people on bicycles. This route is suitable for cycling and wheeling.
Citadel Leisure Centre to South Ayr Circuit
Citadel Leisure Centre to South Ayr Circuit, distance 9.2 miles. This route starts at Citadel Leisure Centre and follows the NCN 7 towards The Millennium Bridge, up to Greenan Castle and onward to Dunure Road. This route is mainly flat and well surfaced. However, the hill to the castle is very steep. Suitable for intermediate people on bicycles. This route is suitable for cycling and wheeling.

Citadel Leisure Centre to Dunure Road, distance 7 miles. This route starts at Citadel Leisure Centre and follows the NCN 7 towards The Millennium Bridge, up to Greenan Castle and onward to Dunure Road. This route is mainly flat and well surfaced. However, the hill to the castle is very steep. Suitable for families and beginners. This route is suitable for cycling and wheeling.
Citadel Leisure Centre to Greenan Castle
Citadel Leisure Centre to Greenan Castle, distance 5.4 miles. This route starts at Citadel Leisure Centre and follows the NCN 7 towards The Millennium Bridge and up to Greenan Castle. This route is mainly flat and well surfaced. However, the hill to the castle is very steep. Suitable for families and beginners. This route is suitable for cycling and wheeling.
Citadel Leisure Centre to Millennium Bridge
Citadel Leisure Centre to Millennium Bridge, distance 4 miles. This route starts at Citadel Leisure Centre and follows the National Cycle Network 7 towards The Millennium Bridge over the River Doon and back. This route is mainly flat and well surfaced. Suitable for families and beginners. This route is suitable for cycling and wheeling.
